Five essentials for effective
time-and-motion studies.
Time-and-motion studies are used to spot inefficiencies in products and processes. At Holmes Solutions we have conducted extensive studies across construction and manufacturing sectors, and we have learnt what delivers measurable impact. Most importantly, we use time-and-motion much earlier in the design process – during ideation and decision making – to surface insights that create real value before waste gets locked in.
Here are five essentials to set your next study up for success:
- Avoid analysis paralysis: Do not drown in data. Start with a clear problem statement and two or three questions you want to answer. Define the minimum set of metrics, limit variables, and create a simple test plan. More data does not equal more insight.
- Remember the people: Construction is craft based and judgement driven. Observation alone will not reveal why a worker chose a specific process or tool. Pair video review with interviews and on-the-spot debriefs to capture intent, constraints, and know-how.
- Do it early: Do not wait until the design is frozen, the product is built, or site works have started. Prototype the concept, even with low-fidelity mock-ups, to trial motions and sequences. Early studies expose waste and issues before it becomes expensive to change.
- Avoid bias: Test conditions should reflect reality. Use a representative mix of people and skills, and vary site conditions where relevant, including weather. Run multiple trials, avoid cherry-picking your best performers, and document assumptions to prevent overconfidence.
- Be selective with AI: Worker-tracking and vision tools can assist with data capture, but they can also create volumes of data that can overwhelm or add little value. Pilot first with a narrow use case, check accuracy, and ROI, then scale only once reliability and relevance is confirmed.
